Yes, this is true. Pennsylvania State Senate was unable to pass a budget, which may result in closing all Philadelphia Public Libraries as of Oct. 2nd.
I heard about this quite some time ago but I thought the situation was resolved. Most recently, I've heard of the budget not passing via TWITTER. There was quite an uproar on twitter, everyone has an opinion but is anyone taking action? I honestly have not been playing my part, as I do know that actions speak louder than words. While this matter was being brought to the attention of my twitter family and especially Philadelphians, celebrities were asked to be involved. One Radio Personality asked a very good question " How can you ask celebrities to be involved when you have not done anything to support this matter". This is when I got my reality check and from the looks of things so did everyone else (there weren't any responses).
Believe it or not, the things that you do in a community do not go unnoticed. I have however been volunteer for the "People for People" after school program at my church Greater Exodus Baptist Church for 8years (started when I was 13 years old). I see the children today all grown up and doing great. They remembered me and thanked me for helping them, I am so proud of that. So, whatever you can do matters and whether or not the public notices, the children do notice. I really haven't seen too many people protesting this or even talking about the libraries. The fact the we are not celebrities is no reason to let our children go without libraries or programs that will further their educations. I'll voices can be heard if everyone pull together and speak on it.
I also would like to say that this is not just happening in Philadelphia, its state wide. Governors, senates, legislators, can all be contacted via, phone, email, or letters. Please reach out to them and give encouragement to do everything they can to keep 0ur libraries open. I know I will.
(Via a radio personality) If you are currently unemployed become a volunteer until a budget can be formed. The more volunteers we can get the better chance we have of keepin the libraries open.
